After retiring from Canada’s Foreign Service, Loreta Giannetti was moved to rekindle her youthful passion for painting. Watercolour became her chief medium of expression. After classes with Morton Baslow, Marcia Lee and Leonard Gerbrandt at the Ottawa School of Art, she studied with Susan Mott as well with Elisabeth Galante and José Duclos at the Montreal Visual Arts Centre.
Her four-year posting as cultural counsellor at the Canadian Embassy in Rome afforded her a splendid opportunity to re-experience her Italian roots and to rediscover the beauty of the hills and mountains of her native Molise.
It is in southern Italy, more precisely in the village of Casacalenda in Molise where she was born, faraway from the main tourist circuits, that Loreta finds inspiration. She plans her paintings to convey atmosphere, emotion and her nostalgia for a beloved town decimated by emigration. With the view to sharing her affection for Casacalenda, she founded an international summer centre there for the appreciation of watercolour and initiation to its techniques (CIAM). Loreta’s works are displayed in public institutions in Montreal and Vancouver, as well as in the homes of discriminating collectors.

Après sa retraite du ministère des Affaires étrangères du Canada, Loreta Giannetti se remet à la peinture. L’aquarelle s’impose à elle comme passion et principal medium d’expression. Elle poursuit une formation à l’École d’Art d’Ottawa avec les aquarellistes Morton Baslaw, Marcia Lee et Leonard Gerbrandt. A Montréal, elle étudie avec Susan Mott et à l’École des Arts visuels avec Elisabeth Galante et José Duclos.
Son affectation de quatre ans comme conseiller culturel à l’ambassade du Canada à Rome lui permet de reprendre contact avec les paysages de la région du Molise et plus particulièrement avec ceux de Casacalenda, son village natal.
Ces lieux, écartés des circuits touristiques, deviennent les principaux sujets de ses aquarelles. Elle cherche à transmettre dans ses œuvres une atmosphère, une émotion, une nostalgie pour un village décimé par l’émigration. C’est aussi à Casacalenda qu’elle fonde le centre international de l’aquarelle du Molise (CIAM) où quiconque peut suivre des cours pendant l’été.
